Remember abuse victims

By Tom Hayes, December 02, 2004

Sir - The litany of child abuse cases over the past number of years has been justifiably received with revulsion by all those who care for and about children. As a society we have been forced to wake up from a haze of secrecy and disbelief. We have witnessed the trauma of so many victims who have endured so much to place the stark realities before us. We owe these victims for lifting the lid on the terrible cancer which affected our society.

It would be a laudable gesture if a songwriter were to write a song to salute those victims and their heroic efforts to overcome a powerful evil. However, a songwriter who decided to hop on the 'victim bandwagon' himself and adopt the persona of an abused person to promote a musical career is trivialising the injustice suffered by so many. To do so is an affront to all those 'Irish sons - and daughters' who suffered real pain.
