Sisters of Mercy Convent

Added on July 13, 2009

Sir, I would like to bring to Bishop Murphy's attention and the wider communities of the Kerry Dioceses that his statement read out at all Masses on the weekend of May 23 and 24 may have given the impression that the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Holy Cross, Killarney, was the subject of the Ryan Report and its associated catalogue of crimes against children.

To date, June 30, we have received over 200 calls from all over Ireland, England, Canada and the USA as local family members speak about this statement and air their views as to which TWO Institutions mentioned in the Ryan Report and subsequently again mentioned in the Bishop's letter.

The Sisters of Mercy Convent, Holy Cross, Killarney, Co. Kerry was not mentioned in the Ryan Report. I was in St Joseph's Boys Home (as we called it) from 1948 to 1954 and am on record, as are a great many other former residents of this home as stating that there was no abuses within this school.

Those of us who were part of the school are sad to read the implied association mentioned in this letter and sorry that the present community of nuns, many who were there in those years could be seen as associated in any way with this shocking report. Sincerely, Tom Hayes, 30 Castle Gardens, Richhill, Co Armagh BT61 9QL.
