Above the law

Added on March 19, 2006

The response from the Law Society to your story (Solicitors ?failed to pass on stamp duty rebates?, News, February 19) was flippant and typical of its reply to all complaints made against their profession.
When allegations were made about solicitors double-charging people before the Redress Board, the initial response from the society was exactly the same. The comment that ?2.2m is a very small amount only compounds its attitude.

One could almost read this as an admission that, while they are aware of the alleged practice, they did not think it worthwhile pursuing. Regretfully there are people in all walks of life that will try and circumvent the rules, but one would hope that the Law Society would be more responsive when such complaints are levelled against their own members.
