THE priest at the centre of a rape allegation in the archdiocese of Tuam is to step aside while an investigation is undertaken, the Archbishop of Tuam confirmed last evening.

There was consternation yesterday when it was revealed in a newspaper report that the priest under investigation for allegedly raping a young pregnant woman was continuing to serve in the diocese.

A Garda Press Office spokeswoman confirmed on Wednesday night that garda? were investigating allegations of sexual assault and are preparing a file for the DPP.

Last night, a statement from Archbishop Michael Neary confirmed the priest had been asked to step aside while the investigation is ongoing, in an effort to lift the veil of suspicion from other priests in the diocese.

?The priest has been asked, and has agreed, to stand aside. The allegations have not been proven true or false and I do not wish to prejudice the garda investigation,? said Dr Neary.

?I have been advised not to make much public comment on the allegations or the case,? he said, adding that the diocese is meeting its requirements regarding the protection of minors.

The priest was asked to step aside following a report which appeared in one national newspaper yesterday, Dr Neary confirmed.

It is understood the alleged victim went to the curate for advice when she became pregnant at 24. She has alleged he raped her on two occasions. It is understood she is now in her 40s but she confronted the priest earlier this year.

Sources close to the garda inquiry are investigating allegations that the alleged victim was paid ?10,000 by the priest, and was offered a further ?5,000.

Garda? confirmed their investigation began after the woman made a statement about the alleged assault.
