A firm of solicitors in Limerick, McMahon O'Brien and Downes, has admitted overcharging some of the clients it represented at the Residential Institutions Redress Board.

A representative of the firm said it would be refunding the clients involved.

Meanwhile, the Law Society's Director General has said the alleged overcharging by solicitors of clients before the Residential Institutions Redress Board could eventually be investigated as a criminal matter.

Ken Murphy said dozens of complaints have now been made to the society by victims of abuse who believe they were wrongly charged by their solicitors.

The allegations that solicitors representing victims of abuse in residential institutions are being paid twice for their work were made by callers to RT? Radio's Liveline programme on Monday.
