New law to aid child abuse probe
Added on April 22, 2005
A NEW Bill to streamline the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, was introduced in the Dail yesterday by Education Minister Mary Hanafin.
The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (Amendment) Bill 2005 amends the 2000 Act and and the Residential Institutions Act 2002 and establishes a body to administer a ?12.7m Education Fund for former residents of institutions and their families.
Ms Hanafin said the changes were necessary as the Department had become concerned during 2002 at the "apparent lack of progress of the Investigation Committee".
