Former Marist Brother convicted of sex abuse in Sligo

16:37 Wednesday March 9th 2005
A former Marist Brother who inflicted a reign of terror at a National School in Sligo between 1969 and 1977 has been sentenced to eight years in prison at Sligo Circuit Court.
Christopher Cosgrove of Ballyhaunis Road, Claremorris in County Mayo was found guilty in January of indecently assaulting six former pupils at St John's National School in Sligo.

Outside court Cosgrove said "he was happy at the eight-year sentence and hoped it would finally bring some closure for himself and the five other men."

Justice Kennedy summed up the effect this abuse has had on the six victims. "Since the abuse one man has attempted suicide several times, another became an alcoholic, and another developed a speech impediment."

He has placed Cosgrove on the sex offenders register for life.
