Catholic exclusivity

Added on February 23, 2005

Sir - David Quinn reports that the Bishops' Conference has set up a working group to preserve the Catholic ethos of church-run schools.

Does this Catholic ethos include the educational 'apartheid' practised by some religious orders, who run fee-paying schools which, defacto, exclude the children of the poor - without even the fig-leaf of a few token scholarhships?

Perhaps a spokesperson for the bishops could explain for us how this practice is compatible with the gospel of Jesus Christ who preached the equality of all God's children.
